[[ supplies for staircase renovation ]]

Now that we are schooled on the basics of a staircase, let's dive right into getting the supplies for our DIY shiplap staircase. Or, skip ahead to the part 3: the process.

Part 2: Staircase Renovation Supplies

I'm going to list off the supplies in the order in which I completed each segment, followed by an overview of everything you may need from start to finish. Items in bold are important tools I used throughout the entire project.

NOTE: this post is for the staircase only (stairs/treads/risers). To view the shiplap wall and wainscoting, click here (post will be up soon, please check back, thank you).

STEP 1

Purge existing carpet

Bucket (to discard scrap materials, I used a standard size Home Depot bucket)

Prep the surface

Cleaning spray & rag

Sanding

Sandpaper (60-70 grit & 120 grit)

Stain Tread

Stain (I used a coat of Rustoleum Antique White, followed by Rustoleum Kona, and lightly sanded Kona after it dried to brighten up some areas to give it that look)
Staining pad (qty depends on how many colors you use + 1 for poly)
Lint free rag for wiping stain
Flathead screwdriver (open the stain cans)
Polyurethane
Hammer (seal the stain cans)

STEP 2 (OPTIONAL)

*I added a small piece of trim above the skirtboard because we had a significant gap (from the board to the wall) to fill

Trim/Skirtboard

Nails (brad nails)
Nailgun (cannot recommend enough)
Flathead screwdriver (open the paint can)
Hammer (seal the paint can)
Pencil
White paint (this is the absolute best for trim)

STEP 3

Paint Riser

Black paint pen + Pencil
Hammer (seal the paint can)
Flathead screwdriver (open the paint can)
White paint (this is the absolute best for trim)
Polyurethane
Caulk gun/caulk
